The Land
| The area which surrounds Minervino Murge in-cludes about 1500 plant species, or 25% of species present throu-ghout the national ter-ritory.
In this area, not far from the city of Minervino stands the majestic "Catel del Monte", a 13th-century building. Built by Emperor Federico II in Apulia, become archi-tectural heritage of UNESCO in 1996, it is a symbol of a thriving cultural tourism. Moreover in Minervino Murge territory precisely in the lower basin of the river Ofanto, stands "La Diga di Locone", the second largest dam in Europe. It is 66.62m high and 1.396km long. Between the cities of Minervino Murge and Spinazzola develops with its 1083 hectares the "Bosco di Acquetta", the largest in Barletta-Andria-Barletta Province and one of the largest in Puglia. |
A speciale place that characterizes the land of Minervino Murge, is the "Grotta di San Michele Arcangelo", a sacred place dedicated to St. Michele Arcangelo. The oldest accounts of the cave date back to 1000 in a papyrus preserved in the Abbey of Montecassino.
The cave has a great artistic value and according to some scholars had already been in early Christian age.
